A legendary hotel overlooking the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz

Located just 20 minutes from Biarritz, the Grand Hôtel Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a historic destination. Famous for its thalassotherapy, among other things, Saint-Jean-de-Luz has always been known for its gentle way of life. Standing majestically overlooking the bay, the hotel has become an essential landmark on the Basque Coast. It embodies the spirit of the Belle Époque with timeless charm, combining French-style architecture and modern luxury. While the Basque Country boasts numerous thalassotherapy centers, the Thalasso & Spa Loreamar at the Grand Hôtel Sain-Jean-de-Luz is certainly the most exclusive.

The hotel’s rooms and suites are elegantly decorated, always using motifs from the 1930s. The rooms are decorated in cream tones, and you’ll feel naturally relaxed and rested. The charming furnishings are second-hand, and the materials used are noble, with magnificent colored velvets to create a very chic atmosphere. So as not to waste any impeccable taste, the hotel has chosen the luxury brand Bulgari for its courtesy products.

Deluxe rooms and suites face the Saint-Jean-de-Luz bay. Some have a private terrace directly above the beach. The classic and superior rooms face the city, yet remain completely quiet.

Between ocean view and seawater pool

Le Grand Hôtel was voted best Spa Hotel in the world at the World Luxury Hotel Awards 2019! Although the spa remains modest in size, it is the excellence of its therapists that has been rewarded in this way. The hotel’s thalassotherapy center is one of the most popular on the coast. Located on the beachfront, it offers ocean views from its heated seawater pool and various balneotherapy baths. You can relax under the brick vaults , sublimated by soft lighting. The intimate, soothing atmosphere is ideal for enjoying all the benefits of seawater, renowned for its rich mineral and trace element content.

The spa also features a contrast shower and salt grotto to awaken the senses in a variety of ways. To turn up the heat, head for the hammam or sauna. Note also that the spa is accessible directly from the rooms.

The spa has 20 daylight treatment rooms, and offers an extensive menu of treatments, all using seawater-based cosmetics, notably from marine cosmetics creator Thalion. For anti-aging skin care, the hotel has chosen Skinceuticals cosmetics. Some treatments are designed to refine the figure, while others are more relaxation-oriented.

For all sports and leisure activities, you’ll find a cardio-training and weights room, as well as a cosy area designed to accommodate a variety of practices such as yoga and ball fitness. Personalized coaching to keep in shape or get back into shape is also available.

Tailor-made wellness cures

Several wellness cures have been created in conjunction with recognized therapeutic experts, such as Docteur Blanchemaison, a specialist in medical spas, and Marc Couget, an expert in nutrition, phytotherapy and Chinese medicine.

The idea is to tailor treatments to individual needs, combining the therapeutic benefits of thalassotherapy. Loreamar’s seawater cures replenish your body’s supply of health-giving minerals and trace elements.

Although all cures are fully customizable, wellness programs are already pre-designed. Each treatment focuses on a different objective, over three or five days. Beauty, detox, anti-stress and vitality are the four themes of the three-day cures. They all offer a physical or aquatic activity as well as three to four thalasso treatments a day. At the end of each treatment, you’ll be offered a draining, slimming or antioxidant drink. To complete your experience, you’ll also receive advice on marine food supplements, and a balanced menu adapted to your needs.

The proposed five-day cures are based on the same principle, this time with between four and five daily spa treatments, and a consultation with a wellness expert at the beginning and end of your stay. As a theme, you can choose between a cure focusing on body shape and beauty, stress relief and sleep, as well as the well-being of your back. One cure also focuses on the remineralizing effects of seawater, and the newest, launched in 2021, aims to restore vitality. Some five-day cures also include an aquatic osteopathy session.

One of the major assets of the Loreamar thalasso center is that it is staffed by highly experienced professionals in a number of disciplines, including osteopathy, hydrotherapy and naturopathy.

A healthy version of Basque cuisine

In keeping with the theme of well-being, the restaurant is keen to offer healthy menus . In other words, vegetables are favored over the notorious fats. The restaurant also sources fresh, pesticide-free produce from local producers. The aim is to return to the most natural, balanced diet possible. The à la carte menu also includes several gluten-free and lactose-free dishes.

At the hotel restaurant, Aho Fina, the flavors of the Southwest predominate. Chef Alexandre Willaume and his team sublimate seasonal produce in a setting as refined as it is convivial. Overlooking the bay, the restaurant and its panoramic terrace offer one of the finest views of the coastline .

Bar Le Clipper also has access to the hotel’s large terrace. It’s the perfect place to watch the sunset while sipping a delicious detox cocktail .
