Equinox Hotels: luxury fitness hotels

Equinox, a chain of high-end fitness clubs in New York, is entering the luxury hotel business. It has just opened its first 5-star hotel in New York, and with a further 75 hotels scheduled to open in the near future… The concept: the fitness club hosts the hotel, not the other way around. It’s mind-blowing!

Harvey Spevak, Chairman and CEO of Equinox, hopes to open 75 hotels worldwide, including a fitness club that would be open to hotel guests as well as Equinox club members.

Aware of the real explosion in wellness and sports tourism, Harvey Spevak was quick to target his future clientele: “We appeal to the demanding consumer who has a very active life and wants to extend it with a hotel experience”. The first hotel features a 5500 m2 gym, as well as indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

After its debut in New York, the brand then expanded to two Californian cities: Los Angeles and Santa Clara, followed by Chicago, Seattle and Houston.

The hotel has fitness/wellness training equipment in all 212 rooms, 48 of which are suites. The idea is also to create an environment that stimulates a healthy lifestyle, starting with optimal sleeping conditions.

It starts with total soundproofing, a rarity in New York. The beds are very comfortable, with COCO-MAT natural fiber mattresses that adapt to individual body shapes.

The health club is, of course, the highlight of the hotel. Hotel guests have access to the fitness area during their stay, with advice on high-performance approaches and muscle regeneration and recovery techniques. The hotel also boasts an indoor saltwater pool, as well as various hot and cold pools and an outdoor pool for more relaxed bathing.

Since food is an essential element of well-being, the restaurant run by restaurateur Stephen Star is keen to strike the right balance between high-energy and dietary ingredients. Some ingredients on the menu are apparently also designed to help promote sleep. There are even vitamin drops supplied in the rooms!
