A palace where harmony reigns supreme

On a hill at the foot of the Himalayas, overlooking the Rishikesh valley where the Ganges flows, stands this completely renovated Maharadja palace and the vast estate that houses the Ananda in the Himalayas destination spa.

Visitors can choose between one of the 78 rooms and suites located in or around the palace, or an individual villa with garden, sauna or private pool. All are elegantly furnished in a classic, traditional Indian style.

Cotton outfits (kurta) are available in every room, allowing those who don them to immerse themselves instantly in the soothing, timeless atmosphere of this kingdom of well-being.

The treatment area covers over 600 m² and offers more than 80 different services, dispensed in 24 dedicated rooms.

Treatments range from Japanese reiki and Ayurvedic consultations to facials, physiotherapy, osteopathy and a wide range of therapeutic and wellness massages.

The spa features a steam bath, sauna, freshwater pool and Kneipp foot bath. And let’s not forget the Ananda swimming pool with its turquoise waters, adjacent to the spa building, where you can extend the benefits of your treatments in the heart of nature.

Holistic care programs

Born in 2001, Ananda in the Himalayas is a spa resort rooted in the oldest Indian tradition. Founder Ashok Khanna has designed the entire hotel and its surroundings around the concept of holistic well-being for mind, body and soul.

The team of experts in Ayurvedic medicine, together with the chef, yogis and nutritionists, have concocted numerous programs tailored to the specific needs of each individual.

Holistic detox:

After determining your dosha (Ayurvedic profile), a detox program tailored to your needs will be set up. It combines Western and Eastern techniques: Ayurvedic treatments, yoga, pranayama, aromatherapy, salt scrubs, mud wraps…

You may need to practice Shatkriya, a colon detox that combines the absorption of warm Himalayan salt water with specific yoga postures.

Yogic Detox:

Daily yoga sessions alternating postures (asanas) and breathing yoga (pranayama) prepare the organs for the salt detox (Shatkriya).

Activ Fitness:

A program designed to help you regain optimal physical fitness and a lean, muscular body. The program includes abdominal-strengthening exercises, yoga, aquafitness, nature treks and long therapeutic massage sessions.

Weight Management:

This program boosts your metabolism and helps you lose weight thanks to a combination of Ayurvedic and Western techniques, including detox, yoga and meditation, as well as an adapted Ayurvedic diet.

Stress management:

Yoga, pranayama, aromatherapy, reiki and other therapies help you rediscover inner calm thanks to a holistic approach.

Ayurvedic rejuvenation:

After an individual assessment, a program is set up to improve vitality, immunity, energy and metabolism. The result is a revitalized body and luminous, fresh skin.

The roots of yoga

What better place to deepen your knowledge of yoga than in the birthplace of the discipline? Ananda offers its visitors yoga sessions tailored to their experience and needs.

Different types of yoga and meditation techniques are taught here:

  • Hatha yoga: individual sessions devoted entirely to improving postures.
  • Gatyatmak Yoga: a dynamic, rhythmic Hatha Yoga sequence based on the sun salutation and moon salutation.
  • Pranayama: the yoga of breathing, particularly useful for regaining inner calm.
  • Advanced pranayama and bandhas: yoga of the breath and contraction of energy locks to stimulate the circulation of energy in the body.
  • Yoga Nidra: meditative yoga leading to a state of deep relaxation.
  • Meditation: several meditation techniques are available to visitors (candle meditation, heart meditation, visualization, spontaneous mantra, chakra cleansing).

Ayurvedic delights

The holistic approach of the site naturally implies that special care is taken with the diet of Ananda’s visitors.

The main restaurant is divided between an indoor pavilion and a terrace built to overlook the Sal forest that surrounds the estate.

Delicious Ayurvedic menus (Photo: Ananda)

Here you choose your menu according to your “dosha”, the typical profile in Ayurvedic medicine: vata, pitta or kapha. The recipes, based on fresh, whole-grain, seasonal produce, are created in a healthy, gastronomic spirit.

The dishes on offer always contain a perfect balance of sweet, bitter, salty, acidic and astringent, just as they combine the micronutrients and macronutrients essential to overall good health.

And to start each day in the best possible way, every morning begins with a signature drink chosen the day before and a bowl of fresh fruit.
