Meet the expert in cognitive development and brain stimulation at Sha Wellness Clinic: Pr Bruno Ribeiro

Through this stay at Sha Wellness Clinic, Ambre Vénissac, Travel Designer at Luxe Wellness Club, sincerely wanted to focus on mental health issues. The pandemic has made it easier to talk about these issues, which are sometimes more difficult to verbalize and share. What diagnoses and solutions does the Sha Wellness Clinic offer for preserving mental health and boosting brain performance?

Mental health, an essential component of well-being

Sha Wellness Clinic offers unique support and care for issues such as stress management, nervous fatigue and burn-out. Mental health is a crucial element to be considered with the utmost care, as it is fundamentally linked to the general well-being of individuals.

According to the WHO, it “is a state of mental well-being that enables us to cope with life’s stressors, realize our potential, learn and work well, and contribute to the life of the community. Mental health is not simply the absence of mental disorder. It is a complex reality that varies from one person to another, with varying degrees of difficulty and suffering, and social and clinical manifestations that can be very different”.

Mental health is therefore a concept subject to many factors and circumstances. For those who are already a little familiar with Sha Wellness Clinic’s approach to health, you may have discovered the focus on Stress Managementa targeted formula that personalizes your stay by incorporating a component designed to alleviate the effects of accumulated chronic stress, identify situations that challenge the body’s ability to cope with anxiety, and gain a better understanding of how the body and mind react to maintain mental, physical and emotional balance for as long as possible into the future. This focus includes a neurocognitive assessment.

Adopting the Sha routine to temper anxiety

The day after her arrival, Ambre started her day off on the right foot, integrating the healthy learnings – in this case, the healthy lifestyle habits that Sha is so fond of – right from the moment she woke up.

Her day began with a superb, sporty hike to the Punta Albir lighthouse, escorted by personal trainer Ismaël.Morning exercise wakes up the body, fills it with light and refocuses it to better face the day. Back at the clinic, her first typical Sha Wellness Clinic breakfast awaited her, consisting of miso soup accompanied by a small porridge of rice, matcha tea, coconut and roses, chickpea and basil hummus and, for crunch, a coconut and chocolate cookie.

Then his marathon of medical consultations began. Depending on the program and treatments chosen, your schedule may differ, and the Luxe Wellness Club team will be happy to provide you with further details.

Diagnostics and consultations: your health status report

  • General medical consultation

After a questionnaire and a general medical consultation to find out about your history, lifestyle, allergies, pains and problems, the Sha teams will proceed with your advanced preventive diagnosis.

  • Advanced preventive diagnosis: body and mind

This tour includes several stages, but don’t worry, you’ll be guided by an attentive and extremely educational professional in an examination room bathed in light.

Sha Wellness Clinic uses the latest equipment and state-of-the-art materials to measure your vital parameters (pulse, saturation, temperature, systolic and diastolic blood pressure), establish your body composition (weight, muscle mass, fat mass, BMI, visceral fat, waist, hip and trunk-leg ratios), assess your cardiovascular risk (vascular age, elasticity) and study your cognitive faculties, stress levels and nervous system (fatigue index, electrocardiac stability, balance and nervous system activity).

The electronic dynamometer measures your muscular strength.

Theneurocognitive assessment continues on an ipad, in a fun format designed to test your short-term memory , visual memory, planning andassociation skills , performance and spatial awareness.

These results are then submitted to Prof. Ribeiro for study. My interview with the Professor consisted of an analysis of my results and the implementation of the protocol recommended by him, punctuated by my questions to document my interview.

Course of a neurocognitive consultation

Before sharing your results with you, Prof. Ribeiro administers a fairly in-depth questionnaire with questions echoing your medical, emotional, family and professional situation. He then highlights the diagnoses made that morning.

Without going into detail, as this is not the purpose of this article, Pr Ribeiro perceived a certain fatigue and a high level of stress in my body. A perfect way to start our exchange, don’t you think? How does this renowned expert define stress?

Stress: are you our ally or our enemy?

To this first question, Professor Ribeiro replies that stress isn’t always negative, thatit prepares us to face certain situations, but our bodies and minds aren’t made to be under stress all the time. Stress can be a sign of preparation and effort, but if it activates our organism unreasonably, orover-solicits it, it proves to be counter-productive. Hence the importance of feeling and knowing our target stress threshold , so as to be sufficiently boosted to give the best of ourselves without being paralysed and overwhelmed by anxiety.

As resilient individuals, our bodies adapt even to unfavorable situations, so it’s often difficult for individuals to notice a certain imbalance in their stress levels. That’s why diagnostics are so important: in addition to highlighting results, they raise awareness in individuals who all too rarely allow themselves to listen to themselves. Pr Ribeiro insists on the importance of making oneself a priority, worthy of attention and love, without turning us into self-centered individuals.

Stress inhibits our immune system, so it’s important to keep it under control. Despite his status, Prof. Ribeiro shows humanity and empathy. He also has great intuition, giving meaning to your results in the light of your life events.

The Professor holds a doctorate in psychology from the University of Valencia, and a diploma in Clinical Psychology from the Higher Institute of Health Sciences (Porto, Portugal). He also works in the fields of addiction and neuropsychology. At Sha, he coordinates the development of new technologies applied to cognitive development and brain stimulation.

Focus on brain photobiomodulation

This is the treatment that made the most sense after analyzing my results. Pictures and explanations below 🙂

Acting like LED therapy, the Professor places a small helmet on your head, and the wavelengths and specific light emitted act on the mitochondria present in our cells. The aim of this technique is tooptimize performance, re-energize the subject and help him or her regain a positive state of mind.

Transcranial electrical stimulation

The other technique presented by Prof. Ribeiro is transcranial direct current stimulation. Both non-invasive and painless, this neuromodulation approach uses direct electrical currents to stimulate specific, strategic parts of the brain. It is notably used in the treatment of depression, addiction and memory disorders.
